Between rock and sea stands La Bonne Mère, overlooking the city, watching over citizens, sailors and fishermen, a presence liked and loved. The Madonna and Child of the Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde, on the highest point of Marseille, is the city’s symbol of protection.

For many people visiting La Bonne Mère of the Basilica on the steep hill is a pilgrimage. There, at the top, with its 360° panoramic view, you realise that the Madonna and Child can be seen from far out in the sea and must be a welcoming symbol for boatmen returning home.

As the hill where the basilica stands is at an altitude of 150 meters it gives spectacular views of Marseille and beyond, an ideal setting to see the vastness of the sea, city, coastline and the long line of mountains.

The season is changing from Fall to Winter although here in the south most days are sunny with a touch of cold, making the light extra captivating with the scenery looking brilliant during afternoons and early evenings. The colorful leaves will be gone until next year’s Fall.

Standing still for a moment with the Sun, on this Sol-stice day, thinking of the people of Ukraïne, Gaza and Sudan, and elsewhere where conflict dominates daily life, the year 2026 will continue with the heartfelt wish for a worldwide collaborative spirit of building peace for everyone.
