Always expect the unexpected. My friend Faty calls me, whether I am interested in visiting the Sunday market of La Ciotat with her friends Véronique, Isabelle and Marco. La Ciotat is about 31 km from Marseille and another picturesque city on the Mediterranean coast. So. Let’s go !

The challenge at a market is that you don’t know whether you will find a similar item cheaper at the other end of the market, which can be far away. For me, the place is just photogenic as it is on the seaside of the city with historic buildings and a panoramic view. What do I want more?

In the past, La Ciotat was known for its shipyards, today it is a center of high-end yachting, repair and maintenance. People here also invented the most popular French game Pétanque that has expanded into annual international tournaments. Comparable with Cassis and Marseille, build around a harbor, it is a most attractive city on the Bay of La Ciotat.

Although the market is pretty crowded and most restaurant-tables are taken, the five of us manage to squeeze into a corner that is out of the midday-sun and order our lunch. My free use of French makes me almost a Marseillais. Good that my friends have a great sense of humor.
