It is mostly in wintertime that I meet the not-shy Alpine Accentor. Its name tells it lives in high mountains, from the Alps to Africa. Just when I wonder if they would be around, one bird lands suddenly near me, intently looks at me and flies away. Then it comes back with three little ones, eying me with a parent’s pride. Now, that makes my new year.

The young birds are so lively and move so briskly that I can’t take a photo, but why should I, observing their enthusiasm for life is my richer reward. And as a bird’s flight is, they disappear as swiftly as they fly in. My focus goes back to the hikers sitting on rocks that give a vast view, others walking on the safe man-made path that leads to vaster views.
