A Bali Journey in 2012

My second visit to Bali, December 2012, monsoon season, pregnant clouds and occasional showers. The artistic expression of religion and culture define every part of the island. Numerous temples, little and grand, are spread over its green lush landscape. Elegantly designed paddy fields characterise the attractive scenery. This is genuinely Bali.

On this visit, I rent a car with an English speaking driver. He, knowing all and everything about his island and culture. The main temple first, the Pura Pengumuman containing the Mother temple Pura Besakih. One thousand years old and one thousand metres high on the slope of the major volcano mountain, Agung. My journey’s summit, reached by car.

Ceremonies are inherent to the daily life of the Balinese. Offerings are made in gratitude to the gods and those spirits that protect life and land; for purification of the individual and community, the world and all elements of the universe. This makes the people freely charming.

The artistic gene is part of everyone due to traditional habits. Either a simple white or a richly colored lungy and headdress define the Balinese fashion. Balinese mythical art of painting and sculpture have evolved with time though original designs are considered sacred.

The mystical Balinese dance is subtle and elegant, through minute head, hand and feet movements deep emotions are conveyed on the ringing sounds of the gamelan, beat of drum and the bamboo flute’s high pitched tune. It is something captivating only the Balinese can do.
